Lasik Q & A
What does LASIK correct?
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileuses, and it’s a procedure that’s designed to reduce your dependency on corrective lenses.
During this procedure, the surgeon changes the shape of your cornea with a laser to help your eyes refract light onto your retina better. LASIK can be used to correct:
Nearsightedness, or myopia
Farsightedness, or hyperopia
The procedure is incredibly quick, often taking less than 15 minutes. You’re free to go home after, equipped with drops that you should place in your eyes for a week or so after the procedure.
You may experience some discomfort in your eyes, and your vision may be blurry, but this usually resolves itself quickly. In fact, you may be seeing more clearly as soon as the day after your LASIK procedure.
How do I know whether LASIK is right for me?
At Ella Eyes, Dr. Ngo takes the time to discuss the pros and cons of LASIK surgery with you to make sure you understand the procedure.
By and large, LASIK is very safe and carries an impressive 96% success rate in improving vision, but every surgery has risks. Dr. Ngo makes sure you understand these risks, and she also discourages her patients from undergoing LASIK if they fall under the following:
- Younger than 20
- Have diabetes
- Are pregnant
- Taking medications that affect vision
- Participate in contact sports
If you feel that LASIK is a good option, Dr. Ngo consults and co-manages your LASIK surgery.
