At Ella Eyes, we want you to enjoy optimal sight. If you're experiencing vision problems, contact our optometrist in Houston to schedule an eye exam. Through a comprehensive eye exam, we can determine what's causing your unclear vision and prescribe corrective lenses to improve your sight. In addition to prescription eyeglasses, we offer traditional and specialty contact lenses to improve the quality of your sight.

Traditional vs Specialty Contact Lenses

Like prescription glasses, contact lenses are designed to correct problems that impact your sight. They come in different sizes and types. Most people can use traditional soft contacts to correct their visual problems and enjoy clarity of sight. Through a contact lens exam and fitting, your Houston optometrist can provide you with an accurate contact lens prescription to give you optimal sight.
However, traditional contacts won’t work for everyone. People with eye conditions like dry eye or astigmatism may require specialty contacts to improve their sight. Specialty contact lenses are designed for people with corneal issues or other eye conditions that make them unsuitable for traditional contacts. If you have any of the following eye conditions, we may recommend specialty contacts to improve your sight:
  • Astigmatism – irregularity in the curvature of the cornea or lens of your eye causing blurred vision at all distances.
  • Presbyopia – age-related loss of near vision.
  • Dry eye – insufficient tear production to keep your eyes moist.
  • Keratoconus – thinning and bulging outward of the cornea of your eye.
  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis – inflammation of the inner eyelid.

Types of Specialty Contacts

Your eye doctor offers a number of specialty contacts to help improve your sight. These include:
- Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses – RGP lenses are good for people with dry eye as they allow more oxygen to pass through the lens to minimize dry eye symptoms. They’re more rigid than soft lenses, which helps correct problems with corneal abnormalities as well.
  • Hybrid lenses – Hybrid lenses are a cross between soft and gas-permeable lenses. They’re often recommended for people with astigmatism to provide better clarity of sight.
  • Toric contacts – Toric lenses offer another option for correcting vision problems with astigmatism.
  • Scleral lenses – Scleral lenses cover both the iris and white of the eye to correct vision problems caused by keratoconus.
  • Multifocal contact lenses and monovision contact lenses – These specialty lenses help correct problems with presbyopia.

Colored Contacts

Colored contacts are prescription contact lenses that enhance your vision and change the color of your eyes for aesthetic appeal.
